Tsitsikamma and the Garden Route National Park Experience

Tsitsikamma-National-park

Garden Route

Tsitsikamma National Park forms a key section of the Garden Route National Park, offering visitors dense indigenous forests, dramatic coastal landscapes, and access to some of South Africa's most popular hiking trails. The park sits between Plettenberg Bay and Jeffreys Bay, making it an easy addition to any Garden Route itinerary.

Outdoor Adventures and Hiking Trails

The park provides multiple outdoor activities for visitors of different fitness levels. Hikers can explore various trails through indigenous forest areas where ancient trees create a canopy overhead. The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours allow guests to zip through the treetops on suspended cables.

Guided forest tours teach visitors about the native trees and the history of woodcutters who once worked in these forests. The park's trails range from short coastal walks to multi-day hikes. Bird watchers often spot the Knysna Loerie and other species throughout the forested areas.

Several circular routes wind along the coastline and through forest sections. The trails offer views of waterfalls, ravines, and beaches where marine life is visible from shore.

Storms River and the Suspension Bridge

Storms River Mouth serves as a central attraction within Tsitsikamma National Park. The suspension bridge spans 77 meters across the Storms River gorge, offering views of the river meeting the ocean below.

Visitors walk across the bridge to experience the coastal scenery from this unique vantage point. The bridge sways slightly as people cross, adding to the experience. A short hiking trail leads to the bridge from the main rest camp area.

The rest camp at Storms River Mouth provides accommodation and facilities for day visitors. From here, guests can access the waterfall trail and other nearby attractions. The suspension bridge remains one of the most photographed spots in the Garden Route National Park.

Otter Trail Highlights

The Otter Trail officially begins at the Storms River Mouth rest camp. This 42-kilometer hiking route takes five days to complete and requires advance booking due to its popularity.

The trail follows the coastline through the park, covering rocky shores, forest sections, and river crossings. Hikers stay in basic huts along the route. Each day covers between 4 and 14 kilometers depending on the section.

Only 12 people can start the trail each day, which helps preserve the natural environment. Hikers need moderate fitness levels and must be comfortable crossing rivers. The trail showcases the diverse landscapes that make Tsitsikamma National Park a highlight of the Garden Route region.
